Sunday Supper Club: Fried Green Tomatoes

It’s not often that I make or even eat fried stuff – but when I do, I do it right.  These fried green tomatoes are super simple and a little spicy.  They’re perfect for snacking on while watching Season 4 Disc 3 of “The Wire” – you heard me, Les.

Zesty Buttermilk Dipping Sauce

3T buttermilk

2T mayo

2T sour cream

1T dijon mustard

1T lemon juice

1 T diced jalepeño (more or less to taste)

1/2T chopped cilantro

1/2T chopped chives

1/2T chopped dill

Salt, Pepper, hot sauce to taste

Place all ingredients in a lidded jar and shake vigorously.  Refrigerate and shake again before serving.  Will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge.

For the Tomatoes:

2-3 firm green tomatoes

High heat oil (safflower, sunflower, grapeseed)

2 eggs

Hot sauce, to taste

Handful of flour

Salt, to taste

Heat the oil in a small cast iron pan.  If you use a large pan you’ll end up wasting a lot of oil trying to get it deep enough.

Slice the tomatoes about 1/4″ thick

Beat the eggs with the hot sauce

Add the salt to the breadcrumbs

Test the oil temperature by dropping a pinch of flour into it.  It should fizzle.

Dip the tomatoes into the flour, then the egg, then the breadcrumbs

Fry until golden – about 4-5 minutes, turning once

Place on a paper towel until ready to serve.  Enjoy them while wondering where the hell McNulty is this season…..
